Oleg Prokofiev
The Last Sculptures 1990-1994
Prokofiev gradually switched his attention to free standing sculpture using much more bulky wood, coloured with wood dyes or bright paint. New forms developed and many of the new works were formally more integrated but also drawing attention to the possibility of each piece being made of parts by a polychrome approach to the colouration. In 1994 a second, rather different, ‘ship’ series was completed. From the very first listed sculpture in 1979 (OP 1) Prokofiev had assigned opus numbers to his sculptures quite separate from the cataloguing of his painting . The last sculpture to which he wished to designate an opus number was OP 752 (1994) and this therefore is his final registered sculpture. Over 15 years he therefore produced 752 pieces.
