The Misty Townscapes 1966 - 1971

In the last years before Oleg left Russia in 1971 he changed his style. Landscapes and townscapes in subdued hues and tones chose as their subjects small provincil towns, with a feeling for rural environments of a timeless folky feeling of eternal Russia. These works were all painted in and around Moscow or in Lithuania, particularly the villages around Vilnius. They are pale, dreamy works, full of yearning and nostalgia using a cool range of colours and in an almost impressionistic style, though for the most part, not in the full light of the French impressionists but in a cold twilight or in the diminished colours of moonshine.
